After the financial crisis Portugal took venture capital investment seriously. These are now supported with public funding. Portugal Ventures was set up to fill the market gap and they are currently managing 17 funds. Funding is of mixed origin - partially national, partially EU and also private. They manage more than 230 mio EUR of assets. Portugal Ventures invests only in startups incorporated in Portugal, whereas the founders can come from anywhere. For this reason they have also set up a startup visa. In terms of secrors, they are strongly oriented towards tourism. On average they invest 300k EUR per startup.
Startup Lisboa too is working with international entrepreneurs. They are a hub of entrepreneurs & investors and work as a non profit organisation. Startups do not need to give up equity to work with Startup Lisboa, but they do pay for services (such as rent). Some startups cooperate virtually, whereas others are working directly at the incubators' premises in the old Lisboa city center. In the seven years since they have been established, they helped raise 100 mio EUR in startup funding.
And if you are looking for funding in Slovenia - do not skip this opportunity.
